Established in 1985, the Commission is a federal agency charged with identifying and reporting on cemeteries, monuments, and historic buildings in Eastern and Central Europe, particularly endangered properties, “that are associated with the heritage of U.S. citizens” and obtaining, “in cooperation with the Department of State, assurances from the governments of the region that the properties will be protected and preserved.” Many of these are Jewish properties seized or damaged during the Second World War and/or neglected during the post-war period.
